Cry Baby Typography

For the 10 minute typography video, I plan to do a mash-up from Melanie Martinez's Cry Baby album. I will use the songs "Dollhouse", "Sippy Cup", "Soap", and "Pity Party". The inspiration for this project came from the song "Dollhouse", where the fictitious character Cry Baby lives. The other songs take place in different rooms of the dollhouse, like the kitchen, bathroom, and living room. For the video, I plan to create a virtual dollhouse and move through the rooms for each song. The color pallet will be muted pastels, primarily pink, yellow, and blue. These colors reflect the art style found on the album cover. For the background art style, I think I'm going to go with a color block look without line work. The included pictures are for inspiration.
Day 1: This day was spent on planning the project. I picked the color themes, style, and songs that I mentioned above.

Day 2: This is the day that I started drawing the furniture. I thought unlined digital art would give it a "plastic" feel which is something I wanted since it works with the style and some of the lyrics. I used reference images and traced over them using Adobe Sketch and an iPad.
Day 3 and 4: I continued drawing. I severely underestimated the amount of time it would take to draw all of these and wound up using some PNGs later. I found a video of a midcentury modern Barbie Dreamhouse that I used as inspiration for the living room and kitchen.
Day 5: I started building the dollhouse. To do this, I created 4 1920x1080 shapes and used those to Alpha Matte the wallpaper backgrounds. Within each of these, I created a composition and worked in those to create the video. I think that worked well, but the workflow was a little odd since I had to control the camera at the same time in the main comp.

Day 6: Continued working and ran into one of my first problems. I thought I would be able to zoom in and use blank space to do a majority of the typography. The images I created were too blurry when zoomed in on, so I wound up going past the background and creating a 3D layer that I could work on.

Day 7: I worked on the composition within the living room composition. This is the yellow background. I experimented with using words to form shapes and using some effects. I used the pen tool to create paths in this video more than I've used them all semester. I thought they worked well to break up the monotony of straight text.

Day 8: Moved to the bathroom scene. I wanted to add more to the background, but because of not being to zoom in it would look to busy with the words. I opted to go for a plain background, but use the words to suggest objects, like towels and bubbles. I also used a glowing orange effect to suggest electricity after the "toaster" falls in the bathtub.
Day 9: Moved to the bedroom. This scene is inspired by the actual music video for "Pity Party". As the songs slow down, the rooms in my dollhouse get barer and barer. The bed served more as a background than an interactive piece. I used the typewrite effect
Day 10: Moved to the kitchen. This is the conclusion of the story, in which we have learned the mom is being cheated on and she takes her revenge. This is the slowest song of the four and has a blocky pacing. I put words on the fridge like fridge magnets and over the background like I had in the bedroom. I also think this is the darkest song, which I paired with the brightest background.
